I have made bold choices, trusted them, and sometimes been rewarded with a laugh from the audience.
Amiera : I can’t precisely recollect when my passion for theater started, but I recall being seven when Gran-pa took me to see Matilda. At curtain call, his whistle broke through the thunderous applause at the Shubert. He said it was the best show he’d seen in his life. I was shocked to see him gleeful. Understand, my grandpa is a straight-backed stoic, perhaps because of his own expatriation from a country he loved. Gran-pa immigrated to New York in 1967 at the age of 17. He tells me stories about his childhood living under a dictatorship ruled by Papa-Doc, Francois Duvalier. He dreamed of being an engineer. Married to his childhood sweetheart by 19, he instead worked in factories, gas stations, and restaurants to provide for his family.
Amiera : After the show, Gran-pa bought me a copy of the cast recording. Each time I listened to the music, I was Matilda—small, stubborn, underestimated, and unmovable. I think of her when I look at a picture of a nine-year-old me standing next to Fearless Girl staring down Charging Bull coincidentally located on Broadway (in New York’s Financial District not the aforementioned Broadway in the Theater District). Perhaps I never knew her because my family has taught me to. To seek justice and follow my passions no matter the disheartening voices around me.
Amiera : In time, fantasy moved from the car stereo that was our only CD player to reality. From fifth grade to the present, from playing Sebastian and Lumiere, to embodying Rosalind and Ganymede, I have been enjoying rehearsals, blocking, stage management, props research and construction, costume design and most importantly the community. A community that slowly builds something bigger than itself. Being supportive of the community means running lines with actors even when you haven’t been cast, consoling others, creating laughter in the windowless prop closet and senior project study group. Being part of this community has also reinforced the importance of showing up on time and being prepared. I prepare like it matters, because it does. The show can’t go on if members of the team aren’t ready to do their jobs. I have wrestled with Shakespeare’s language until it stopped feeling foreign and became my own.

Amiera has developed strong production and leadership skills through hands-on technical theatre experience. She has contributed 300+ crew hours annually, supporting productions through prop coordination, lighting, stage management, and backstage operations. She has also mentored new crew members, fostering collaboration, organization, and a strong sense of teamwork within the production environment.
